Minecraft: Story Mode is an ongoing episodic point-and-click narrative-driven graphic adventure video game based on the sandbox video game Minecraft, released in October 2015 across multiple platforms with a Windows 10 release on December 16, 2015, a Wii U release on January 21, 2016, and a PlayStation Vita release arriving at a later date. The game is being developed by Mojang AB, the developer of Minecraft, in collaboration with Telltale Games. Music for the game is being composed by Anadel, an atmospheric folk band based in California. The game follows the episodic format that Telltale has used for its previous titles, where player choices and actions have siginificant effects on later story elements.
Minecraft: Story Mode is an ongoing episodic point-and-click narrative-driven graphic adventure video game similar to Telltale's previous titles such as Tales from the Borderlands. The player is able to collect items, solve puzzles, and talk to non-player characters though conversation trees to learn about the story and determine what to do next. Like other Telltale Games, decisions that the player makes will have an impact on story elements in future episodes. However, unlike Telltale's previous games that carry more mature or emotional overtones including the death of major characters, Story Mode is known as a family-friendly title, so the decisions are still pivotal and emotional but do not involve mature imagery or themes. Elements of crafting and building, central to Minecraft, are included in the gameplay, following a similar approach. The game features combat and other action sequences, carried out through both quick time events similar to Telltale's other episodic games, and more arcade-like controls, such as steering around debris on a road. The game also mixes new characters with original themes to make an entirely original Minecraft experience.
Episode 1 (The Order of the Stone)
The story begins with the narrator talking about the Order of the Stone: Gabriel the Warrior, Ellegaard the Redstone Engineer, Magnus the Rogue, and Soren the Architect. The Order manage to defeat the Ender Dragon and slipped away into legend. In the present, Jesse, Olivia, Axel, and Jesse's pet pig, Reuben, are preparing for the Endercon Building Competition, and they decide on which mob to make. After gathering the supplies, they head to the competition and decide on a team name. A rival team, The Ocelots, vows to win the competition again, calling Jesse's team "The Order of the Losers". Nonetheless, Jesse's team completes their build, drawing attention from judges and other builders. Aiden, a member of the Ocelots, intentionally spills lava on Reuben's costume, setting it on fire with Reuben running off into the woods. Jesse then decides to either let his / her friends stay and protect the build, or go on with Jesse and find Reuben.
In the woods, Jesse is able to find Reuben hiding behind some tall grass, but they are attacked by a group of hostile mobs. After finding a dead end, the player decides whether that Reuben should run back to Endercon, or stay with Jesse for protection. After hearing Jesse's cries for help, Petra comes to Jesse's aid, and they retreat to a nearby cave. In the cave, Petra shows Jesse a wither skull that she got from the Nether, and tells Jesse that a man at Endercon is trading her the skull for a diamond. Jesse feels suspicious at first, but reluctantly accepts to assist her. On the way out of the cave, they are stalled on a bridge with hostile mobs charging at both directions. With no way out, they either jump or fight, and return back to Endercon.
Back at Endercon, Jesse congratulates his / her friends on winning the competition (or cheers them up if they lose), and is motioned by Petra to move to the "dark alley" for the trade. In the alley, they meet Ivor, who they trade the wither skull with. Petra is scammed with lapis lazuli, and she and Jesse attempt to stop Ivor. At the gate to the hall, the usher will not allow them in unless they have tickets, but they later find out that the usher is afraid of chickens. Coming up with a plan, they use a slime block to break open the chicken farm by jumping up to it, causing the usher to become distracted and allowing Jesse and his / her friends to go in the hall.
In the hall, the group find an open door and sneak inside to find Ivor's secret room. Jesse pulls a lever to reveal a chest with two wither skulls, and a pattern on the wall. Lukas tells them that Ivor has intended on creating a Wither to destroy the convention, and they all agree to stop him. Having caught Ivor in his scheme, Ivor successfully retreats Jesse's group back to the main stage by spawning an iron golem. As Gabriel is talking to the crowd, Ivor shows up and pulls a lever, revealing the Wither. The Wither consumes the command block attached to its body, creating the Wither Storm. Jesse's group, Gabriel, and Ivor all retreat to Gabriel's temple, where a nether portal is found. Jesse lights the portal up and some of his / her friends go through, but Jesse stays behind to aid Petra and Gabriel fighting off the Wither Storm. Just as Jesse attempts to save them, he / she is knocked back by a tentacle of the Wither Storm into the nether portal with Lukas.
In the Nether, the Wither Storm destroys the portal, and Jesse's group of friends (minus Petra) confront Ivor, where Ivor tells Jesse that the minecart track is the only way out of the Nether. Dodging some ghast fireballs, Jesse's friends safely arrive at another nether portal, which leads them to a cliff-slide hill in the Overworld. They then decide on whether to make a hut or a treehouse and rest to recharge for the trip to the temple. In the morning, Jesse's friends find the temple, where it is revealed that Ivor was one of the members of the Order of the Stone, but was kicked out as he distrusted Gabriel. They then use the amulet to find out where the rest of the Order are, and the player chooses whether to find Magnus with Axel, or find Ellegaard with Olivia.
Episode 2 (Assembly Required)
If the player decides to find Magnus, Jesse, Axel and Reuben will return to the Nether and arrive at a portal which leads them to "Boom Town", a village overrun by griefers. Jesse, Axel and Reuben barely escape the onslaught by the griefers, arriving at Magnus' hideout. They talk to Magnus about leaving to go save the world, in which Magnus reluctantly agrees, but only if Jesse beats him in the Death Bowl, where griefers face against Magnus with the prize of becoming the king of Boom Town. Jesse barely wins the Death Bowl, allowing Magnus to come along with them. The Wither Storm arrives and destroys Boom Town, forcing Jesse, Axel, Reuben and Magnus to retreat back to the temple through the Nether.
Likewise, if the player decides to find Ellegaard, Jesse, Olivia and Reuben will return to the Nether and arrive at a portal which leads them to "Redstonia", which is labeled "the capital city of engineering". Jesse either crafts a repeater or steals one from Disco Mickey's contraption, and re-enable the stair controls, leading them to Ellegaard's "Dome of Concentration". Inside, they meet Ellegaard, who has attempted to create a command block for more than 6,451 times. She is surprised to see Jesse and Olivia and thinks Calvin sent them here. Jesse interrupts, saying that Gabriel sent him here, and she remembers the Order before they split up. Jesse, Olivia, and Reuben agree to help her create a command block. On the third attempt, Ellegaard thinks the command block is destabilizing, but the Wither Storm arrives and destroys Redstonia, forcing Jesse, Olivia, Reuben and Ellegaard to retreat back to the temple through the Nether.
Arriving back at the temple, Gabriel or Petra greet them, and Jesse's friends attempt to find Soren. Ivor shows up on the map, shocking Jesse's friends as well as the Order. They all agree to stop him before he arrives at Soren's hideout. The player decides on whether to go to find Ivor at night or in the morning, and they leave to go to Soren's temple. At the temple, Ellegaard and Magnus cause a ruckus regarding who should stop the Wither Storm, and they both go their separate ways. Jesse decides on whether to go with Ellegaard or Magnus, and Gabriel or Petra go along with Jesse to talk to him / her about a private manner. It is revealed that Gabriel or Petra got "Wither Sickness" from the Wither Storm, which is more fatal than getting it from a regular Wither. A creeper blows up behind them, causing the floor to give way to a library, where Jesse finds Ivor. Gabriel or Petra show up to aid Jesse, and the three fight it out with swords and potions. Jesse's friends show up to stop him, but Ivor hits them with a splash potion of slowness, leaving them behind so Ivor can kill Ellegaard and Magnus, as well as demolish the world of Minecraft.
Episode 3 (The Last Place You look)
After the potion effect wears off, Jesse and his/her friends have to think of another way to get to Soren. Thinking quickly, Jesse uses the amulet and finds out that Soren is deep underground. They dig a hole to a passage which leads them to a mob grinder. A creeper blows up a portion of the passage, causing the amulet to slip out of Jesse's hands and fall onto a platform. After fighting some hostile mobs, Jesse successfully retrieves the amulet, but slips on some water, causing him/her to fall towards death. Luckily, a creeper blows up the "crusher" just in time so Jesse and his/her friends fall down safely. From there, they are sucked in by gusts of water to the latter portion of the grinder, causing them to fight even more hostile mobs. Barely escaping, the group find an end portal and jump in.
In the End, the group is confronted by several Endermen, but the group manages to find Soren heading up a staircase. The group decides that the only way to get to him is to safely walk past the Endermen, in which they do so. At the top of the staircase is an area made of wool, but Lukas goes off in a rage, thinking this area was all there was. Lukas storms off as Jesse finds a secret door, which leads them to Soren's house.
Inside his house, Jesse and Olivia stumble upon some music playing and a voice behind a door. Opening it, it is revealed to be a jukebox playing a recording. Frustrated, Olivia searches around the room to look for some clues while Jesse listens to the rest of the records. One of the records talks about Soren making a suit to disguise himself as an Enderman, which Jesse later finds on his/her own. Jesse also finds some blueprints in a chest, in which Olivia believes that it is being used to teach the Endermen to build. After collecting the five clay bricks inside the room, Jesse goes outside to take the sixth brick from an Enderman, causing the Enderman to become "frustrated". Acting quickly, Jesse completes the crafting recipe, only to be knocked out by another person in an Enderman suit. Back inside, it is revealed that the person is indeed Soren. Soren feels suspicious at first, but immediately recognizes the Order when Jesse mentions the Amulet. Gabriel (or Petra) and Soren happily reunite, but their celebration is cut short as Endermen teleport into his house, causing them to escape the End.
Back in the Overworld, the group use a set of minecarts to head back up to the surface. Upon arriving, Magnus and Ellegaard are there to assist the group. As the Wither Storm approaches, both Ellegaard and Magnus request Jesse to take their set of armor. Upon choosing either, Jesse makes haste to craft the Formidi-Bomb. Upon doing so, he/she throws it at the Wither Storm just before it explodes. In the aftermath, the Wither Storm is presumed dead, but either Ellegaard or Magnus also die due to a blow from one of the Storm's tentacles. Jesse then helps out some survivors, but finds out that the command block wasn't destroyed, allowing the Wither Storm to come back to life. Surprisingly, either Gabriel or Petra (whichever the player abandoned at the temple) shows up to assist them, but is forced to retreat to a safer area. It is also revealed that they have amnesia, and have forgotten their names.
Episode 4 (A Block and a Hard Place)
Jesse and his/her friends are forced to retreat to a safer area by horse, dodging the Wither Storm's attacks and building a bridge along the way. At a cavern, the group rest before they head off again. Gabriel/Petra's (whoever was trapped in the Wither Storm) memories begins to come back, remembering certain events from earlier episodes. Lukas may leave the group to search for his gang, while the wither sick Gabriel/Petra may be told by Jesse to stay behind to rest. Outside, Soren and Ivor are in an argument about the Wither Storm, but it is revealed that the Wither Storm was intentionally following Gabriel's amulet as Ivor had programmed, but failed to account for the amulet falling in Jesse's hands. Ivor apologizes for the trouble he caused, and says he has a solution to destroying the command block inside the Wither Storm. Accepting the idea, the group head off to Ivor's lab, located in the Far Lands. Axel and Magnus/Ellegaard take the amulet and split from the group.
The group decides to take a rest in a swamp and find some food before heading off again. Jesse and Ivor find a nearby witch hut with a cake adoring the window, but Ivor warns him/her that witches hate trespassers. Fending the cake, the witch arrives back at the hut, attacking Jesse with potions, but Ivor mysteriously disappears. Likewise, if you choose to return to the group with your findings (potatoes), the mobs still attack, but this time Ivor stays behind to distract them. Jesse and the group barely escape the onslaught and arrive at the Far Lands. They find an entrance that leads them to Ivor's lab, completing a maze and building a redstone contraption in the process.
Inside the lab, Jesse and Soren find the five treasures of the Order (prismarine shards, sea lantern, ghast tear, packed ice, and a dragon egg), and use them to open up yet another door, leading them to a room that appears to be designed after the Order of the Stone's battle with the Ender Dragon. As Soren explains the battle, Jesse opens the next door, containing the enchantment book and Ender Crystals, which Soren claims to have been destroyed during the battle with the Ender Dragon. Jesse realizes that Soren had lied about the story, and he admits that the command block was used to make the dragon vanish and the Order were never truly heroes, which ultimately caused Ivor to leave the group in the first place. Ivor returns and explains that he only intended to prove that the Order were false heroes using the Wither Storm. Jesse and his/her group of friends are in total shock about this ordeal, but quickly forget it as they have to defeat the Wither Storm. Ivor gives Jesse the enchantment book needed in order to break the command block, uses it on a diamond tool, and offers him/her a new set of armor. With everyone ready to go, they head back to the main land to fight the Wither Storm.
Back at Soren's temple, the group attempt to destroy the Wither Storm by provoking Endermen to be attracted to it. The Enderman are then able to remove blocks from the Wither Storm, creating a hole that allows Jesse to go inside the Storm. The group use all of the items that they have to create an invention that will allow Jesse to go inside the Storm. The invention works, launching Jesse and Reuben into the Wither Storm. Inside the Storm, Jesse and Reuben find the command block. With Jesse using the enchanted weapon, the command block begins to crack, provoking the Wither Storm, using tentacles to defend the command block. Jesse fends off numerous tentacles, and is able to crack the command block a second time, but the tentacles grab him/her and force him/her to drop his/her weapon. Reuben grabs the weapon and delivers it to Jesse, but is knocked into a pit. Jesse finishes off the command block once and for all, causing the Storm to explode.
Back on the ground, Jesse finds a gravely injured Reuben, who dies in his/her arms. A week later, back at Endercon, a memorial for Reuben is made and Gabriel and Petra have recovered. Gabriel may be told by Jesse to reveal that the Order of the Stone were frauds. Everyone congratulates Jesse and his/her group of friends, now known as the new Order of the Stone, for stopping the Wither Storm. The group then head off on their next adventure.
Episode 5 (Order Up!)
The new Order of the Stone (consisting of Jesse, Axel, Petra, Olivia, but not Lukas) arrive at a temple in the jungle, eager to find treasure. After solving a puzzle, they go downstairs to find the treasure (an enchanted flint and steel), but are surrounded by hostile mobs. Barely escaping death, the Order decide to go see Ivor to talk to him about the flint and steel they found. On their way back, they are interrupted by the Blaze Rods (formerly the Ocelots and now without Lukas), talking smack about the Order as well as their former member, Lukas. After Jesse threatens to fight them, they stop annoying them and walk off into the jungle, Aiden warning Jesse that things won't always be this way.
Back at home, Ivor is found building a lava house that is deemed "unsafe" by fellow citizens. The player can either choose if it should be kept up or if it should be torn down by the citizens. Nonetheless, Ivor, Petra, Jesse and Lukas meet in the treasure room of the Order's palace. Ivor is shown the enchanted flint and steel when he realizes that it can lead them to the Eversource. Without time to waste, they all head back to the temple and find a portal, but as they light it, the Blaze Rods enter the portal first, followed by Jesse, Lukas, Petra, and Ivor.
The portal brings the four (Jesse, Lukas, Petra, and Ivor) to an island in the sky that is close to "Sky City", a city where unauthorized building is prohibited. Nonetheless, the four build over to Sky City by creating a bridge of dirt. From there, they meet up with Milo, a well-known person of Sky City. Before they could get information on the whereabouts of the Blaze Rods, the whole town is called for an emergency meeting. Isa, the founder of Sky City, threatens to arrest Jesse for building the bridge, but Ivor decides to turn himself in instead.
If the player goes with Ivor, Jesse and Lukas also turn themselves in and meet with the Founder. Jesse has a chat with the Founder, explaining why they aren't criminals. Nonetheless, the Founder sends all three to prison, but Reginald sees that they aren't actually criminals and are here to stop the Blaze Rods, so he lets them free to stop Aiden.
Likewise, if the player goes with Milo, Lukas will be captured anyway and Jesse and Petra go to a secret room in the inn that is home to the Build Club. It is also revealed that Milo is the leader of said club, but in order for the builders to be sure that they are "builders", Jesse has to craft either an anvil, an iron golem or iron boots. Milo, Jesse, and Petra then head to the palace to stop the Blaze Rods.
In the throne room, all five meet up and head to the resource room, lined-up with chests filled with spawn eggs. The group successfully finds the Eversource, which turns out to be a chicken who makes spawn eggs. Isa and Aiden both show up to stop them, with the Blaze Rods betraying Isa and pushing Jesse and Isa (Lukas as well if the player doesn't help him fight Aiden) off a ledge into the Void. Isa is surprised, however, that there is land below Sky City, and apologizes to Jesse for the issues prior. With that, Jesse and Isa (If Lukas was pushed off, he will have to stay to recover from his injury) build up to Sky City to stop Aiden.
Back at Sky City, the Blaze Rods are spawning hundreds of mobs such as ghasts and zombies to destroy the city, but Jesse and Isa go through them with ease. Ivor gives Jesse a potion of the player's choosing to go past the other two members of the Blaze Rods to meet up with Aiden. Aiden spawns two Blazes to stop Jesse, but they are killed with ease. Aiden and Jesse then swordfight, with Jesse getting the upper hand and knocking away Aiden's sword. Realizing his fate, Aiden has no choice but to surrender and give back Jesse the enchanted flint and steel. The player can choose to send Aiden over the edge of Sky City, walk away from him, or take Aiden with. (all choices but taking Aiden with you will lead to Aiden falling down a waterfall)
Back at the entrance to Sky City, the citizens have no choice but to fall down the waterfall toward land, surprised at what they see. Both Isa and Milo want to have full power of the people, but it is up to the player to decide if Milo should have power, Isa should have power, or if both should share power. Aiden and the Blaze Rods are formally arrested, while Isa gives Jesse the Eversource's crown as a token of gratitude. The four then head back home, but the portal instead leads them to an area filled with dozens upon dozens of different portals.
Episode 6 (A Portal to Mystery)
One of the portals leads the four (Jesse, Lukas, Petra and Ivor) to a cemetery. On one of the tombstones is a book, which is an invitation to the Host's mansion. The group are then surrounded by hundreds of zombies, but they escape and make it to the mansion.
At the mansion, the front door is locked, so the four go around back and make it in through a kitchen window. Inside, they meet TorqueDawg and CaptainSparklez. Suddenly, TorqueDawg dies after being hit by tipped arrows shot from a dispenser. LDShadowLady then greets the group, and they all head to the main hall. There, they meet Cassie Rose (along with her pet cat, Winslow), DanTDM, Stampy Cat, and stacyplays, and they all head to the dining room.
In the dining room, CaptainSparklez tells everyone that TorqueDawg has died, and Jesse may show them the cause of death. Afterward, Jesse can ask anyone for information regarding TorqueDawg's behavior and personality. CaptainSparklez then tells Jesse that TorqueDawg was in search of a "rare item" - the enchanted flint and steel. Jesse may or may not show CaptainSparklez the enchanted flint and steel that he has, and CaptainSparklez informs everyone that they were brought here because someone has it. Suddenly, CaptainSparklez falls into a pit and dies from suffocation. The White Pumpkin then informs everyone that he is seeking the treasure that he desires (the enchanted flint and steel), and that he will not rest until he gets it, even if he has to murder others. Cassie Rose tries to escape, but the mansion is surrounded by zombies. Jesse and Lukas then inspect the dining room, and find four buttons on the dining room table. They also find out that the White Pumpkin in said room was made using an armor stand, likely as a diversion.
Jesse then interrogates four likely suspects of being the White Pumpkin; the suspects being DanTDM, LDShadowLady, Stampy Cat, and Lukas. DanTDM claims that the flint and steel is his, that he had never seen tipped arrows before, and that he is a redstone novice. He goes to Lizzie for potion information and Stampy for redstone information. LDShadowLady wants the flint and steel, claims that she is a intermediate redstoner, and that she knows what tipped arrows are. She thinks that Stampy could steal the flint and steel, and she also goes to him for potion / redstone information. Stampy doesn't want the flint and steel, claims that DanTDM made up his claim, and that he never saw tipped arrows. He goes to LDShadowLady for potion information. However, Stampy lies about redstone, saying that he is a redstone novice, while he actually was the Tri-Block Champion. Afterward, Jesse may accuse someone of being the White Pumpkin, or instead conclude that there isn't enough evidence to suspect anyone of being so. Lukas keeps an eye on the five while Jesse, Petra, and Ivor inspect the kitchen trap.
Inside the kitchen, Jesse punches out a painting on the wall, revealing a passageway with a lever. The lever supposedly controls the dispenser firing the tipped arrows, which reveals that the White Pumpkin uses the passageway to get around the mansion. From there, the three make it to the library through the passageway, which is filled with dozens of spiders. Depending on who you choose to attack, either DanTDM or LDShadowLady die from either being killed by spiders or murdered by the White Pumpkin. Jesse and Lukas then race after the White Pumpkin to the east side of the mansion before he puts the mask on Lukas. As such, the other people fraudently accuse Lukas of being the White Pumpkin. Lukas is interrogated, while Jesse and Petra find evidence to prove that Lukas was innocent. Jesse and Petra then find a secret entrance to the basement of the mansion.
In the basement, Jesse and Petra find a item transportation system, a white pumpkin farm, and a central hub for the White Pumpkin. This hub contains information on potions, chests of inventories of the people who died, a lake, and dozens of calico cats. This leads to Jesse believing that the White Pumpkin is Cassie Rose, in which she confesses for being so. Just as they are about to attack her, Cassie falls into her own trap and is presumed to be dead. The seven then leave the mansion, with three people parting ways with the new Order of the Stone. The portal that they light up is a dud, causing them to fall down a pit. In it are several endermites. The White Pumpkin (Cassie Rose) isn't dead at all, and starts up the trap. Petra, Lukas, and Ivor make it to safety, while Jesse and the White Pumpkin battle for the enchanted flint and steel. Jesse finally gets the upper hand and knocks the White Pumpkin into her own trap. The player may choose whether to throw down Winslow or walk away, and the new Order of the Stone leave through the actual portal.
In a post-episode scene, CaptainSparklez informs the player of the group's next adventure.
